In Jaffa liegen: ohnmächtig, krank oder tot sein. Die Redensart scheint in Deutschland auf Ostfriesland beschränkt zu sein (›he ligt in Jaffa‹; vgl. aber niederländisch ›hij gaat naar Jaffa‹; ›hij is al in Jaffa‹). Vermutlich liegt ein Wortspiel vor, wobei einerseits die Hafenstadt dieses Namens gemeint ist, in der viele deutsche Orientfahrer früherer Zeiten gestorben sind; andererseits ein Wortanklang an ›Jappen‹ = nach Luft schnappen.
   Laut Wander stammt die Redensart aus der Zeit der Kreuzzüge, als man in Jaffa landete und viele dort starben. Wenn man nach dem Schicksal eines Kreuzfahrers fragte, hieß es: »Wo wird er sein? Er liegt in Jaffa«. Jaffa (griechisch Joppe, hebräisch Japho) besaß als Hafen für Jerusalem schon in frühester Zeit eine große Bedeutung.
